Hematologist: what to know

A hematologist is a doctor specialising in the blood, bone marrow and lymph nodes. They treat anaemia, clotting disorders, abnormalities of white blood cells or platelets, and diseases such as leukaemia or lymphoma, following patients throughout their treatment.

When to book an appointment

• Persistent or unexplained anaemia despite treatment
• Abnormal white blood cell or platelet counts on a blood test
• Frequent bleeding, unusual bruising or a clotting disorder
• Previous thrombosis or assessment before anticoagulant treatment

Consultations with a hematologist are covered by basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG); depending on your insurance model, a referral from your family doctor may be required.
