View profileLymphatic drainage: what to know
Lymphatic drainage is a gentle, rhythmic massage technique that stimulates the flow of lymph. Often performed by specially trained physiotherapists, it is used to reduce certain types of swelling, for example after surgery, an injury or with lymphoedema, and is frequently combined with compression.
When to book an appointment
- Swelling in an arm or leg after an operation
- Lymphoedema that develops following treatment for cancer
- Swelling after a sprain or fracture
- A persistent feeling of heavy, swollen legs
Costs in Switzerland
Lymphatic drainage by a physiotherapist is reimbursed by basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG) on medical prescription; when given by a complementary therapist, it is generally covered by supplementary insurance.
