Neurosurgeon: what to know

A neurosurgeon is a surgeon specialising in the brain, spinal cord, spine and nerves. They assess whether an operation is appropriate and treat conditions such as slipped discs, narrowing of the spinal canal, certain tumours and head or spinal injuries.

When to book an appointment

• A slipped disc with pain spreading into the leg or arm
• Narrowing of the spinal canal making walking difficult
• A surgical opinion on a brain or spinal cord finding
• Follow-up after a head or spinal injury

Costs in Switzerland

Neurosurgical consultations and operations are covered by basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG); patients are usually referred by their family doctor or another specialist.
