Nuclear medicine uses small amounts of radioactive substances to examine how organs are working, for example through scintigraphy or PET scans. The nuclear medicine physician performs and interprets these examinations and can also give certain treatments, particularly for thyroid conditions.
When to book an appointment
- A prescribed bone, thyroid or heart scan
- A PET scan as part of further investigations
- Radioactive iodine treatment for an overactive thyroid
- An additional examination requested by your doctor
Costs in Switzerland
Nuclear medicine examinations are covered by basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG) when prescribed by a doctor, who will usually refer you to the relevant department.
