Ophthalmologist: what to know

An ophthalmologist is the specialist doctor for the eyes and eyesight. They test your vision, detect and treat eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts or macular degeneration, prescribe corrective lenses and can carry out certain eye operations.

When to book an appointment

• Your eyesight is getting worse or your vision is blurred
• A red, painful or irritated eye for several days
• Regular check-ups if you have diabetes or glaucoma
• New spots, flashes or floaters in your vision

Costs in Switzerland

Consultations are covered by compulsory basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG); glasses and contact lenses generally fall under supplementary insurance, depending on your policy.
