Orthoptist: what to know

An orthoptist assesses and treats problems with binocular vision, eye coordination and visual perception. They often work alongside an ophthalmologist, carry out detailed eye examinations and visual assessments and offer exercises suited to both children and adults.

When to book an appointment

• A squint or eyes not looking the same way
• Double vision or eye strain at the screen
• Vision screening for a young child before school
• Visual rehabilitation after a stroke or head injury

Costs in Switzerland

Orthoptic examinations carried out as part of ophthalmological care are generally covered by compulsory basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG); check the conditions with your insurer.
