Podiatrist: what to know

A podiatrist looks after foot health and treats conditions affecting the skin and nails of the feet. They treat corns, calluses and ingrown toenails, provide care for at-risk feet, particularly in people with diabetes, and give advice on prevention.

When to book an appointment

• A painful ingrown toenail or thickened nails hard to cut
• Corns, calluses or hard skin that make walking uncomfortable
• Regular foot care if you have diabetes
• Pain or rubbing caused by shoes in everyday life

Costs in Switzerland

Podiatry for people with diabetes may be covered by basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG) on medical prescription; other foot care is generally a matter for supplementary insurance.
