Radiologist: what to know

A radiologist is the specialist doctor for medical imaging. They perform and interpret examinations such as X-rays, ultrasound, CT or MRI scans, then send a report to your doctor, who uses it to reach a diagnosis or monitor treatment.

When to book an appointment

• An X-ray after a fall or an injury
• An MRI or CT scan requested by your doctor
• An ultrasound scan of the abdomen or thyroid
• A screening mammogram or a follow-up mammogram

Costs in Switzerland

Imaging is covered by compulsory basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG) when prescribed by a doctor; a referral is generally required.
