A sports physician treats injuries and health problems related to physical activity, for both recreational and competitive athletes. They carry out fitness assessments, advise on returning to training and, where needed, coordinate care with physiotherapy.

Consultations for injury or illness are covered by compulsory basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG); with a family doctor model, a prior referral may be required.
