Medical laboratory: what to know

A medical laboratory carries out tests on blood, urine and other samples requested by a doctor. The results help to detect, confirm or monitor a condition and to check how well a treatment is working; they are sent to the prescribing doctor.

When to book an appointment

• A blood test prescribed as part of a check-up
• Regular checks of cholesterol, blood sugar or thyroid
• A urine test when an infection is suspected
• Monitoring blood values during a course of medication

Costs in Switzerland

Tests prescribed by a doctor and included on the official list are covered by compulsory basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG); tests without a prescription are usually paid for yourself.
