Oncologist: what to know

An oncologist is the specialist doctor for diagnosing and treating cancer. They draw up the treatment plan, often together with other specialists, prescribe and monitor treatments such as chemotherapy or immunotherapy, and support the patient throughout their care.

When to book an appointment

• After being given a cancer diagnosis
• Starting or continuing a course of chemotherapy
• Regular follow-up after treatment has finished
• A second opinion on a proposed treatment plan

Costs in Switzerland

Medically necessary cancer treatment is covered by compulsory basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG); the first appointment is usually made on a doctor's referral.
