Speech therapist: what to know

A speech therapist assesses and treats difficulties with communication, spoken and written language, voice, speech and swallowing. They work with both children and adults, for example with delayed language development, stammering or after a stroke.

When to book an appointment

• Late language development in a young child
• Reading or spelling difficulties at school
• Stammering or a hoarse voice that persists
• Speech or swallowing problems after a stroke

Costs in Switzerland

Speech therapy is covered by compulsory basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG) on medical prescription; for children, cantonal funding may also apply depending on the situation.
