A child and adolescent psychiatrist is the specialist doctor for the mental health of children and young people. They assess and treat emotional, behavioural or developmental difficulties, working with the family, the school and other professionals involved with the child.

Consultations are covered by the child's compulsory basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG); depending on the model, a referral from the paediatrician or family doctor may be requested.
