Nephrologist: what to know

A nephrologist is a doctor specialising in the kidneys. They treat kidney failure, chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure of renal origin and imbalances in body salts, and follow patients on dialysis or who have received a kidney transplant.

When to book an appointment

• Blood tests showing reduced kidney function
• Protein or blood found in your urine
• High blood pressure that is hard to control despite treatment
• Follow-up of kidney disease, dialysis or a transplant

Costs in Switzerland

Consultations with a nephrologist are covered by basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG); depending on your insurance model, a referral from your family doctor may be required.
