Cancelling a medical appointment: good practice

How to cancel a doctor's appointment, how much notice to give, and why it matters for other patients. A practical guide for patients in Switzerland.

Published on 15 October 2026

Something unexpected, a sick child, a symptom that clears up: everyone has to cancel an appointment at some point. Doing it properly benefits everyone.

Cancel as soon as you know

An appointment cancelled early is almost always taken by another patient. An appointment missed without notice is a lost slot while other patients are waiting.

Respect the practice's notice period

Each practice sets its own cancellation period, often 24 or 48 hours. It is stated in the appointment confirmation. Some practices may charge for an appointment not cancelled in time, provided they have announced this.

How to cancel on Synamed

  • From "My appointments", in one click.
  • From the link received by email or text message.
  • To reschedule, simply choose a new slot: the old one is released automatically.

What if the deadline has passed?

Let them know anyway, via the link or by phone. Even at the last minute, the practice can sometimes offer the slot to a patient on the waiting list.
